Space is Cool Again - Guardians of the Galaxy Review

If you haven't seen this film, go watch it now. I should've posted my review ages ago, but due to internet issues I've been put back a week. From advanced screenings in 3D to re-watching it in 2D, I always come back to one conclusion: this movie is awesome. Marvel was taking a risk when they decided to put a talking racoon and a walking tree in a live action movie. Thank goodness the risk taking paid off. Under the helm of director James Gunn, GOTG gives us a quirky, comedic, exciting, and most of all, dramatic movie-going experience. All of you DVD renters and illegal downloaders listen here, "this is one for the big screen. Do not miss out!"

With that gigantic plug out of the way, it's time to get to the point. In a quick and punchy fashion, here is my review of Guardians of the Galaxy
"Citizens of Xandar, behold your guardians of the galaxy! What fruit have they wrought?"

A Brief Overview

When did space politics get interesting? It didn't, but that doesn't stop big baddie Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace), a Kree fanatic, from going on a total terrorist rampage. As an extremist all he wants to do is destroy the planet of Xandar, its culture, and of course all of its people. The Xandarians' only hope are the Guardians of the Galaxy: a thief, Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord (Chris Pratt); an assassin, Gamora daughter of Thanos (Zoe Saldana); a maniac, Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista); a talking racoon, Rocket (Bradley Cooper); and a walking tree, Groot (Vin Diesel).

Ronan poses an enormous threat to Xandar and he poses an even bigger threat to the universe. It's almost ridiculous to think that some rag tag team of outlaws could ever beat this seemingly unstoppable force. But you know what's better than an unstoppable force? A team of total badasses.

My Thoughts

Visuals - See it in 3D
I have always been a fan of the boundlessness of the universe. GOTG is able to take the magnificence of space and serve it up in a superhero movie. The film is visually spectacular on so many levels. The vivid colours and gigantic sets are truly out of this world. I have seen this film in both 3D and 2D and I must say that my 3D viewing experience was far greater than the other. As I always say, the true greatness of 3D conversion is to give the image depth. You want to bring the audience into the screen, rather than try and make the pictures pop out. If 3D is your cup of tea then I can guarantee that you will be fully immersed in this motion picture.

Performances - A Great Team of Actors
Visuals aside, this film also has very stellar performances. The simple plot of the film pushes us to focus on the dynamic characters that are the Guardians. Chris Pratt fully embodies Peter Quill, or rather he completely infuses himself into the character. Rocket and Groot are able to capture your attention whenever they are on screen, but especially when they are together. I am most disappointed with Zoe Saldana's character Gamora because I expected much more badassery from the deadliest woman alive. However, along with Dave Bautista, and Drax's dry humour, they make for some very fitting supporting characters. Needless to say the chemistry between all five members of the team is amazing.

Feels? How About all of Them
This film has everything. Just like every Marvel movie they've got action, but GOTG also spots some very emotional moments. Space is wonderful, but it is also harsh. People actually die in this movie, and you will feel for them when they do. In addition, the humour takes a turn for the more mischievous due to the influence of director James Gunn. Although it's probably getting a lot of money from the kids, this film is one us oldies will definitely enjoy. Accompanied by the 70s soundtrack, with songs like Hooked on a Feeling, you will definitely be smiling walking out of the cinema. You might even want to come back for a second viewing.

My Score: 4/5 Stars

Completely badass. That is what I would say to describe this film in one word. I have been waiting for this movie ever since they announced it shortly after The Avengers. Not only does this film have a couple of amazing easter eggs that push Marvel's Cinematic, and now Galactic, Universe forward, but it is also an amazingly good time at the movies. I've seen it twice in cinemas now and I can't wait to see it again. Sure it's not the best film in the world, but it's pretty darn good. I only hope that we'll see more development of a few characters like Gamora and Drax, but other than that I'm a happy. The positive response of this film is pretty universal so I suggest you go out and treat yourself to this film.

What about you? Do you love this movie? Do you agree or disagree with my review? Which guardian is your favourite? Let me know in the comments!
