Spiderman is my all-time favourite superhero. I booked up my advanced screening, in 3D, the first chance I got. Every morning I'd wake up at whisper to my brother, "Soon". I've seen it, and well... It did not disappoint. Here are my first impressions on The Amazing Spiderman 2: Rise of Electro.
"No spoilers here... yet."
A Brief Overview.
Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) is back as our friendly neighbourhood web slinger, and he's gotten good at it. Peter loves being Spiderman and fighting crime in the big city of Manhattan, but this time he's got a whole other thing coming. The main baddy in this Spidey movie is the electricity wielding, Electro (Jamie Foxx). As much of a bad guy Electro is, Peter soon finds out that the true centre of evil is none other than Oscorp. The place where his father used to work, the place where his old friend Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan) is now in charge, that is the place where the baddies come from. With the foes getting even more ridiculously powerful, and not to mention evil, Peter has to worry about protecting those he loves (pssst, that's his girlfriend Gwen Stacy/Emma Stone).
My Thoughts? Awesome.
I love this film. Go watch it. If you want a good night of entertainment then please do yourself a favour and watch this movie. If my word isn't enough for you, then let me break it down into a few reasons why I love this film.
The Performance is Engaging.
A key part to this film is the relationship between Peter and Gwen, and my gosh did Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone have chemistry. They give the right amount of sweetness, awkwardness, and emotionality to makes their relationship feel so convincing. You know that kind of feeling where you smile when they smile? Yea that sums it up.
This time we get to see a whole lot of villain. Jamie Foxx was great as usual, but Dane DeHaan... I loved him as Harry Osborn. He's got just the right amount of crazy for the role of the Goblin. Together, they make the best villain team up I've seen so far. Speaking of DeHaan, he also has the right kind of best-friend chemistry with Garfield. Overall, the performances of the various actors kept me in the movie the whole time.
The Story is Balanced.
Director Marc Webb (haha, Webb) did a great job with this movie. I know he wasn't in charge of the script and the writing, but when it comes down to it he's in charge of the final product. The movie addresses many things that needed answering from the first instalment. We get more closure on Peter's parents; we see how Peter has to deal with the guilt of dating Gwen; and most importantly we get to see Spidey kick some ass. Personally, I love mindless action, but the fights between Spiderman and Electro were hardly mindless and really well done.
The film has good character development. I was really able to connect with Peter and see how he deals with the changes and challenges throughout the film. By the end of it, his life will never be the same, and I fully understand why. The same goes for each of the other leads, and they all have their moment to shine. Don't worry about the film being over crowded.
The Music.
You know how Superman has his own theme? Now Spiderman get's a new cinematic theme too. However, Spiderman fans will recognise a few classic tunes throughout out the film. The real showstopper has to be "Electro's Theme". It's not really his theme, but it always plays during his screen time. A great mix of electronic sounds, orchestral interludes, and spoken word. You can feel his thoughts, his anger, and his power. I find the music of films play an big part in keeping you engaged, and this score did not disappoint.
A Recommendation.
If you have the extra money, WATCH THIS IN 3D. It really adds to the atmosphere and the cinema going experience. People say that you get a dimmer picture, and the colours aren't as vibrant, but I reckon this movie is the exception. Not only do you get extra depth of image, but you can see the sparkly electricity floating everywhere! I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but if you're going to do it for one film, do it for this one.

My Score: 4.5/5 Stars
Yea I'm a Spidey fan so take all the grains of salt you want, but I loved this movie.
Have I convinced you to go see it? Have you seen it and agree or disagree with any of my thoughts? Let me know your thoughts and ratings in the comments!
I enjoyed the film too Mark but I feel like it had quite a few disappointing moments along with a lack of proper relationship development. Harry's onesided transformation was terrible imho. He isn't very conflicted in turning into the GG and ends up being just another evil supervillan. Plus I was preparing for the climax to make me cry but it didn't unfortunately. The mood was offset there I think. Either that or I am heartless.
ReplyDeleteBut good review bro. I would give spidey a 3/5 though.
