My New Year's Resolution: Grow

With 2015 coming to a close it seems almost compulsory for me to do a sappy "2015 in Review" post. Instead of doing that, let us all be hipsters together and look towards the future: 2016. I'll be looking at my resolutions and goals for the new year, and hopefully you can strive for some of the same goals too.

If you really want to see my year in review, why not check out my post about "2015 in Film". I briefly comment on all the films I have seen this year, and give them each a score out of ten. Some of the results might surprise you. For now, let us continue with our look-forward on 2016.

Theme for 2016: Grow
How many new year's resolutions centre on completely changing your old self? It's strange that we find the quest of discovering the "new me" an avid goal for the new year. I believe I'm done with soul searching, and determining my own identity. So instead of striving for change, I want to strive for improvement. Particularly in myself, and in my relationships with others.

Grow in Yourself
1. Maturity
Hopefully I have become more mature in 2015. I find that quality very respectful and attractive. That's the main reason why I love talking to my seniors in university. Their views have grown with them through their lives, and that makes their advice more meaningful. In 2016, I want to be that person to other people.

2. Style
I really want a trench coat. Ever since the start of my university life, I have become fairly interested in men's style and fashion. In 2015, I learnt about the art of colour combination and getting the preppy look down. In 2016, I want to expand my wardrobe further. At the moment, that means finding the perfect trench coat. Shopping anyone?

3. Artistry
I want to improve my skills in writing, cooking, music, and ultimate. I'll be helming the email newsletter for Auckland Overseas Christian Fellowship at university. That'll be fun. As for my other hobbies, I want to invest more time into them to perfect my craft. This means more layouts in ultimate, more homemade dinners, and finally completing my disney fingerstyle medley. No performances guaranteed though.

Grow With Others
1. Talk to People
I see so many lives that I'd love to learn more about, but my lazy ass won't start the conversation. In 2016, I'm going to try something new, and only wish people "Happy Birthday" on Facebook through private message. This puts me in a spot to either follow up on their replies, or just give them the "thumbs up". For all of you who are reading this who have received a thumbs up from me, don't worry, I still love you... maybe.

2. Engage in Relationship
If you really want a relationship to grow then you have to invest into it. Actively engaging in the other party is key. It should also be said that people show love in different ways, and being able to reciprocate it in a similar way is a good idea. So in 2016, I want to get better at noticing people's personalities so that I can know how best to interact with them. There's also the added bonus that I might learn how to manipulate them. Soon they'll amass into an army of devoted followers. That sounds nice right?

Jokes aside, those are my goals and resolutions for the New Year. I have a lot of thoughts about the best ways to interact with people, but I think I'll leave that for another post. If you want more practical advice on how you can implement these goals in your life, then hit me up in the comments or on Facebook!

You're probably either Jesslyn or my parents anyway, so it shouldn't be hard to get a hold of me. Have a happy new year people!
